Correspondence of a New York congressman and judge who was associated with James D. Doty in midwestern land investments. More than 20 letters from Doty, 1836-1840, concern territorial politics in Wisconsin and land speculation in Rock Island, Illinois, and in Madison, Green Bay, Prairie du Chien, and the vicinity of Portage, Wisconsin. Among others who corresponded about Vanderpoel's Madison property were David Brigham, Simeon Mills, and John Catlin. A few tax receipts and maps pertaining to the Madison lands accompany the letters.

James Duane Doty (1799-1865) was a lawyer, judge, and government official. He represented Wisconsin in Congress between 1838 and 1841, and again between 1849 and 1853. David Trowbridge Brigham (1806-1865), son of Edmund Trowbridge and Elizabeth or Lucy Davis Trowbridge, was born in Shrewsbury, Mass. He graduated from Union College in 1829 and was admitted to the bar in 1831 after studying law in Orange County, N.Y. and with Pliny Merrick (1794-1867) at Worcester, Mass.
